5 Selling Points of Your Book
There are many steps when it comes to hooking a reader into picking up your book. Marketing is a tough job. Influencing readers is like a web. Let's dive into how this web is woven together!
1. BOOK COVER: Whether in a bookstore or scrolling through Goodreads or online, your book cover is the first thing potential readers will see. “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” does NOT work in this case. Readers will judge the cover of your book, and it is one of the first things that will catch a reader’s attention.
2. BLURB: The second thing a reader will judge about your book is its blurb. If your cover captivates a reader enough, they will want to know what the story is about. This is where you will hook them with your book’s blurb.
3. FIRST LINE: Next, once being convinced to pick up a book from its cover and then its blurb, a reader will open up the book to read the first line. This is why a first line is so incredibly important. This is the next way you hook readers. A first line can determine whether a reader will walk out of the store with your book, or if they will set it back on the shelf.
4. FIRST PAGE: If your opening line is strong enough, a reader might read your book’s first page right then and there. To have a reader hooked in this way is an incredible accomplishment, and means that you are one step closer to having this reader purchase your novel. Ensure your page has momentum, no errors, and readers have a grasp on your narrator/main character.
5. FIRST CHAPTER: By the time a reader reaches your first chapter, you likely have them captivated and your book is going home with them 😉 Congrats on such an accomplishment!
