How to Write the Passing of Time
π HOURS
β’ Shadows stretching / moving.
β’ The darkening / brightening of the sky.
β’ Food or tea / coffee goes cold.
β’ A character falls hungry.
β’ Crumbles of paper end up on the floor while a character does does homework / paperwork.
π WEEKS
β’ Wounds heal.
β’ Characters' mood changes based on outdoor temperature.
β’ Projects come and go.
β’ A new roll / job begins for a character.
π MONTHS
β’ Character's hair / beard grows long and unmanageable.
β’ Characters go from wearing one season of clothes to another season.
β’ Festive decorations go up / down.
β’ Outdoor temperature changes, leaves fall, flowers bloom.
β’ Bedroom / room temperature changes via to counteract the temperature outside.
π YEARS
β’ Milestones are reached (graduation, buying a home, having a baby, etc.)
β’ A change occurs within the landscape.
β’ Older characters grey / younger characters grow.
β’ Deaths occur.
β’ Technological advancements.
β’ Takeovers have taken place.
Always be sure to show the passing of time rather than delving into another scene without any indication π€
