Questions to Ask a Book Editor Before Hiring

1. Do you (the editor) have familiarity with [insert genre]?

2. Are you willing to perform a sample edit?

3. Do you have testimonials from clients you've edited for or a list of published books you've edited?

4. What types of editing do you offer? Developmental Editing, Line Editing, Proofreading, Copyediting, full-service editing?

5. Do you offer positive feedback during editing? No one likes feedback that is all negative. Find an editor who is supportive and will cheer you on!

6. Do you have full-service editing packages or offer deals for multiple edits?

7. Do you have a contract that we would both sign? This is where your work is protected, a schedule for service is outlined, and more! Do NOT work with an editor who doesn't offer contracts, period.
